Core Values and Work Ethics

As we are currently looking at the topic of work ethics and codes of practice I thought I would share the core values our company have issued. These are posted up at the theatre and have been handed out to various employees. Many companies have a mission statement which expresses their goals and vision. The core values make up a part of the mission and reflect the deep held values the company has and should reflect in the way they operate i.e. hiring, firing and performance reviews. They also show how a company will treat customers, suppliers and the surrounding community.

The following reflect the work ethics, code of practice and values at Celebration Entertainment.

Core Values

1. Deliver WOW through service and SURPRISING value every day
2. Be a SUPER HERO. (Do the right thing. Seek solutions not blame. Be humble)
3. Be AUDACIOUS, wildly CREATIVE and slightly WACKY
4. Open MIND. Open HEART.
5. Be a CRUSADER for a change.
6. LEARN constantly. GROW exponentially.
7. Communicate with HONESTY and TRANSPARENCY.
8. Build a POSITIVE team and FAMILY spirit.
9. Do MORE with LESS
10. We CARE about and SUPPORT the COMMUNITIES where we work and live.
11. Be PASSIONATE and COMPELLED.
12. Raise the BAR!

These values really reflect the family feel they are trying to create and a company where we help each other  out and work as a team. As employees, it is our job to demonstrate these values everyday in work through decision making, interactions with each other and behaviour.

I think it is important to recognize the core values of your work place as they may differ to your personal values or even overlap. Being creative, passionate and constantly learning are part of my professional values, whilst honesty, an open mind and open heart are part of my personal values.

Demonstrating good ethics at work is vital to show you are professional and an asset to the company. People with bad ethics rarely get promoted or are liked. Employers expect you to do a good job and good ethics can lead to a successful career.

  1. Hi Laura,
I really love those core values! They express such passion. I think you are absolute right when you state that employers look for people with a good work ethis to be prompted. I have been thinking about Ethics or Ethos really being a part of who you are...i,e your character. How easy is it to adhere to the code of ethics of a company? Does it have to be part of who you are or can it just be something you do? what do you think?

  2. Hi Joanna. Yes I love these values as well and thats why this is such a great company for me as I feel they have great values and work ethics. At my theatre I feel that many of the people hired all share these same values anyway. However, I think that you should at least respect your companies values and try to adhere to them otherwise it may not be the right company for you. I think it is important to establish your personal ethics first as they are important in everyday decisions you make- at work or life in general. I think you can improve on your work ethics. Some examples might be:
    - arriving early to work
    - seeing the positive in situations
    - being friendly to ALL staff at ALL times
    - being proactive and concerntrating on your job
These are all things that we all constantly need to work on. They are not necessarily a part of who we are but more what we need to strive towards to get to the top and be a valued employee.
    What do you think?

  3. Who wrote them - author - time - it sounds like form what you have said these are fairly recent... did a team write them? what was the process - Joanna thinks them successful - so could feed that back to you company while asking more questions. Wenger calls some documents - reifications - might be worth a look - how do these differ form a code of practice?

  4. I find the values statements interesting. They seem more to me like affirmations or beliefs, which are not bad things, but in what way do you think they vary from ethics.

So, take 'do MORE with LESS'. There could be an ethical aspect there (not doing harm to environment, not wasting, developing an innovative approach etc) however, some people would argue that the statement, when applied might challenge their ethics. This might be because they are being told to work harder for less money, scrimp and save and perhaps impact the audience experience by spreading the paint a little thin. An in there lies one of the key aspects of ethics, interpretation and understanding of what a standard or value means
